TORNADOES, HURRICANES, AND SUCH

The most spectacular and violent examples of vortices in the atmosphere are tornadoes and hurricanes. One such example is the tornado seen at the right. A satellite vortex can be seen to the left of the main core. Such satellites can result in far greater damage than that occurring for a single core due to the high local wind speeds generated. There has also been evidence of satellites on the ground after the tornado passes. The traces of the satellites can be seen as spiral swirls going around the main damage path.
