ABOUT THE GALLERY

General
The origin of this site was a set of Flow of the Week pages I developed for my students in an undergraduate fluid mechanics course here at Virginia Tech. The idea was help my engineering students recognize and appreciate fluid mechanics in their day-to-day lives. Since then I realized that a more permanent and comprehensive gallery could be of value to a much wider audience.

The current idea is to provide a collection of pictures, movies, and even sounds which illustrate the amazing variety and beauty of fluid flows. As indicated on the front page of the Gallery, explanations of the physics are included partly to illustrate where classroom concepts "show up" in everyday life.

I've found that most fluid mechanics courses and web sites focus on specific types of flows. I think that this gallery is also unique in that it provides the visitor with a much broader view of fluid mechanics and its applications.

Level
I've tried to set the level of this site so that everyone from the lay-person to the PhD can find something of interest. While some of the explanations will only make sense to engineers, mathematicians, and physicists, most are non-mathematical and ought to be accessible to those having some familiarity with high school physics. Certainly, the biggest impact is due to the individual images, sounds, and movies themselves. I've found that even middle school students ( and their teachers ) can feel the same sense of awe and wonder that those of us who work in the field experience every day.

Web Stuff
The Gallery has been designed to be accessible to everyone with an internet connection and a frames-capable browser. For this reason and in order to keep the focus on content instead of form, I've tried to keep the web design as simple as possible.

I've tested this site on nearly every system/browser/screen setting combination possible although I'm sure that there is a combination that I've missed. I hope that most of the bugs are out.

Of course, if there are any problems with viewing the site, please contact me. This is an active project and I will be more than happy to do any maintenance.
